At the time that Mary was due to give birth, she and her husband Joseph traveled from their home in Nazareth south to Joseph's ancestral home of Bethlehem, in order to register in a census ordered by Caesar Augustus. Having found no place for themselves in the inn, they lodged in a room where animals were kept. And there she gave birth to her firstborn son whom she wrapped in cloths and laid in a manger.
An angel of the Lord visited the shepherds that were guarding their flocks in fields nearby and brought them the "good news of great joy" that "to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord". -- Luke 2: 1-11
